"I think I'll ride Moonshadow today, Cliff," Courtney said, tapping her leather crop idly against her leg.
"That's fine," remarked the head groom at the Lovett Academy stables. "Shadow's already saddled up and ready to go. Just make sure you have him back in about an hour. We need him for a lesson."
"I'll see what I can do," Courtney teased in an airy, unconcerned tone.
Placing one booted foot in the stirrup, Courtney swung herself up onto the back of the dark chestnut horse. She didn't mind the look of admiration in Cliff's eyes. He was kind of cute, even if he was just a groom. And Courtney knew she deserved the admiration. She was very aware that her close-fitting riding breeches and crisply tailored white shirt were flattering.
She and Moonshadow started off at a trot, Courtney saluting Cliff with the crop. "Ta-ta!"
"An hour, Courtney!" he called after her.
An hour would be plenty of time, but Courtney liked to keep Cliff guessing. Without a backward glance, she guided Moonshadow toward the bridle path and urged him into a gentle canter.
It was a beautiful, sunny Monday. And everything's going my way! Courtney thought, smiling. She recalled her conversation with Lila Fowler at the country club on Friday. Lila had been shameless. She might as well have taken notes. But after all, that was what Courtney wanted. She wanted Lila to absorb every word and then repeat them syllable for syllable for Elizabeth Wakefield's benefit.
"Poor Lila," Courtney said out loud to Moonshadow, ducking her head to avoid a low tree branch. "It really is too bad her father didn't send her to Lovett. She has everything in the world going for her, but she could use a little polish."
In the past Courtney hadn't had much use for Lila, even though she knew Lila wanted to be friends with her; it was blatantly obvious that the girl wanted to wangle her way into the exclusive Lovett crowd. Then Courtney learned Lila was best friends with Elizabeth Wakefield's twin sister, Jessica. And Elizabeth Wakefield was the only obstacle between Courtney and what she wanted most in the world, for the moment at leastâTodd Wilkins.
As Moonshadow cantered easily along, Courtney daydreamed about Todd. Tall, dark, and handsomeâamusing, intelligent, and richâhe had everything! Best of all, he was somebody new. And, really, with the Varitronics connection, it was obvious they were meant for each other. The son of the company president was definitely worthy of her companionship.
Todd liked her and found her attractive, Courtney felt sure. She had never met a guy who didn't like her. And she was equally sure Todd secretly wanted her to be his date at the big party he was planning. It was only natural. From all appearances, however, he still harbored an attachment to his old Sweet Valley girlfriend. Courtney hadn't been very impressed by her "rival" when she met her at the Wolfe Hall party. Elizabeth was pretty enough in a sweet, goody-two-shoes way. But obviously the relationship was just a quaint holdover from Todd's pre-Lovett days.
